WHAT IS COI?

Community of Inquiry

Any technology tool can help enhance online or blended learning. Choosing the right technology is challenging depending on your topic. Screencast-o-Matic, Blogger, YouTube or other tools can be used online or in a blended learning environment. For example, during Covid-19 there has been a surge in innovative technology-based teaching in education, especially higher education. Nevertheless, whether teaching is in person, online or through blended learning, the key priorities remain the same that students are engaging in the learning experience.  Educators can use the COI model to integrate the best technologies into curriculum in order to empower them and help student learn. The Community of Inquiry theoretical framework represents a process of creating a deep and meaningful learning experience through the development of three interdependent elements – social, cognitive, and teaching presence.

These are the Common Element of COI

Screencast-O-Matic

Screencast-O-Matic is a free screen capture system that allows teachers the opportunity to easily share their device screen with students, both in class and during remote learning.1 It is also a great tool for a flipped classroom as it does nearly everything you could want for free.1 Therefore, the ADDIE model has also been recognized as effective, systematic and efficient in designing the flipped classroom in nursing education.2 However, Screencast-O-Matic gives you a login through a browser window to get you started. Once you've got an account and have granted permissions, you are able to start screen capturing.1,2 Screencast-O-Matic offers four options: take a screenshot, launch the recorder, open the editor, and open uploads. Screencast-O-Matic is used to record screen activities to create how-to do videos for just-in-time learning. It provides everything you need to create, share and manage videos to empower the learning experience.3 Hence, you can create tutorials or lessons for classroom instruction, share videos with students so they can learn on their own.3 This can be done via online learning / blended learning. Teachers /lecturers can deliver impactful online training and keep the online learners engaged during and after the teaching sessions.

Blogger

Blogs may be a great educational tool that give students complete freedom to publish content on the web such as Nurs 6005. Blog is short for web log and more like an online diary or journal, except blogs aren’t necessarily private, instead they’re created for an audience. However, just like a diary or journal, a blog is relaxed, making it an easy and comfortable way for students to get writing. Blogging can improve students’ writing skills and build their confidence as writers and receive feedback from their peers.4 By blogging, students can take ownership of their writing, become better observers of others’ writing, and develop a more immediate and powerful understanding of audience.4 Blogs and wikis are online writing tools; in a blended learning environment, blogs are primarily used for individual, reflective writing, while wikis can be very effective for collaborative research and writing activities.5  Twitter is an example of microblogging, and while it may not be effective for deeper, reflective writing, it can be used creatively for connectivity activities such as tagging useful learning resources, and as with social bookmarking.5 Therefore, some of the usage of blogging is to publish assignments, reading resources materials, and keeping students up to date with class events, due dates, and the content being covered.

YouTube

YouTube can be useful for teachers who want to find or create their own open educational resources, or for learners as a platform for video-based learning activities such as the screen casting project. The utilization of YouTube videos in the classroom may be beneficial for instructors and maybe entertaining for some students. In this 21st century students are more interested in exciting activities, and they're more likely to pay attention when they watch videos instead of having read walls of text in books and notes.6 However, according to a researcher, YouTube is only one of many online learning resources to make getting a college degree more straightforward and accessible.6 This occurs because it demonstrates that video material is viral and draws in more people than any other content. The usage of YouTube acts as a supplement to your content rather than as the main method of teaching it. Therefore, YouTube videos are well-suited for auditory learners, and teachers may include kinaesthetic learning by having students engage in physical activities while viewing videos.6 It also allows teachers to fully demonstrate a whole experiment, from the beginning to the end, in a manner that is more interesting to students than looking at photos in a textbook. However, YouTube gives an opportunity to provide students to express their creativity and the ability to understand complex subjects better.
